Tour
I use two types of pattern pieces. One has a seam allowance and is meant to be cut out before it is sewn. The other is a "template". A template is a pattern piece that looks exactly like the finished piece—no seam allowance. You simply trace around the pattern directly on your fabric and then I sew on the traced line. I can then cut out the piece leaving a small seam allowance and the piece will be the exact size and shape of the finished piece. As much as I would LOVE to take credit for this fabulous way to sew a delicate piece, I have learned this technique from the patterns of many fabulous doll designers. Bless their souls. I have, however, learned to adapt it well to my own patterns. I use a Sharpie to trace lines on dark fabric where the line won't show. For a lighter fabric, I use an air dissolving pen.
